An undivided ‘natureculture’ approach? The potential of overcoming the nature/culture divide in the study of human-animal domestication.

Abstract: Human-environment relations has been for decades one of those ‘flagship topics’ in anthropology, to which evidence from the North (or Arctic) has significantly contributed. Inspired by the relations of Arctic indigenous peoples to their environment, key scholars such as Tim Ingold (2004) have argued for overcoming our analytical divide between biology and culture. When there is no such divide any more, consequentially also natural and social sciences cannot approach their fields separately any more. This is based on the idea that organisms do not have a pre-defined genetic mastermap. Rather, any organism takes shape from its relations with and agency in its environment. In this lecture I use collaborative anthropological and genetic research as a starting point to test how such a ‘natureculture’ approach (Valkonen 2022) is applicable in practice, when we study processes of human-animal adaptation to the Arctic. Joint anthropological-genetic research design can deliver new insights to how humans and other factors in the environment influence together the processes of adaptation of animals to extreme climate. From an anthropological point of view, I analyse if first results from new genetic sequencing techniques – on the example of Yakutian horses –support Ingold’s theory of the relational shaping of organisms in the environment.

Siberian Anthropology and the Digital Archive: A reflection on three decades and the future

The roundtable:
The digital archive is one of the critical tools of development in contemporary science, since it expands the method of conservation of research materials and cultural legacy and might reshape the disciplinary itself. The purpose of this roundtable is to exchange and discuss its potential in the field of Siberian anthropology. Since the start of the post-Soviet ethnographic endeavors in the 1990s, the first generation of Siberian anthropology scholars are in the process of retirement. They leave behind an impressive testimony of three ‘golden’ decades of freedom in Siberian research, in the form of massive records of fieldnotes, visual records and material cultural artefacts. What could be identified as ethnographic archives and how do we hand them down to the next generation with the help of digital technology? How can digital technology be used at times of closed borders for the continuation of research exchange between Siberia and the rest of world? These are the main topics of the roundtable.
As a medium for learning from the past, the archive has been already crucial for the development of Siberian anthropology. After suspension of Western and Asian scholarly fieldwork during the socialist regime, scholars did not only embark on new fieldwork themselves – they also reevaluated the vast records of Siberian ethnography from19 century tsarist Russia and the Jesup North Pacific Expedition in the early 20th century. These are rich descriptive resources of religion, custom, social organization, and subsistence of Siberian indigenous peoples. Based on such legacy, anthropologists working in Siberia coordinated their ethnographic encounters in related disciplines and developed their theory in a broad context of sciences.
Since the Russian government invaded Ukrainian territory, we are again confronted with a halt of fieldwork. Many academic exchanges were suspended. While we may ethnographically explore this critical setting, this urges us to recapture the happy past thirty years of open Siberia, to explore new ways of research both in archives and in field. At this roundtable, we shall discuss the increased importance of digital archives in this situation, not only as repositories of the past, but maybe also as tools for continued collaboration between Asian and Western scholars and their partners in Russia. Differently from physical artefacts, digital technology can continue to cross borders. We can explore the potential of the travel of data instead of the travel of people for continuation of research insights from Siberia.

題目 “Evenki guides and their cargo reindeer in geological research expeditions of East Siberia and Russian Far East”
要旨 In the presentation I will describe how indigenous Evenki reindeer herders were involved into resource exploration expeditions as skilful reindeer caravan guides. I will describe how this involvement shaped the way Evenki accommodated themselves in the taiga and how they enacted their exchange accessing goods important for their life in taiga. This involvement also affected the use and selection of reindeer and human/reindeer relations in general. Indeed, Evenki guide work was a prestigious profession of Soviet collective farm as well as lifestyle that conditioned cultural exchange between indigenous and geologists shaping Evenki further self-determination as well as contemporary expectations.
